Dr. Joel Amidon is Professor of Teacher Education in the School of Education at the University of Mississippi. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from University of Wisconsin-Madison, M.S. in Educational Psychology from the same institution, and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Amidon serves as Vice President of Communications and Outreach for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators and President of the Mississippi Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
His research focuses on equity and justice in mathematics education, developing pedagogical approaches that foster unconditional support for learners. His work examines emotional barriers to mathematics learning, antiracist teacher education, and innovative field experiences. Current projects explore virtual practicum designs and strategies for addressing math anxiety through asset-based approaches.
Dr. Amidon maintains an active public scholarship profile through multiple podcasts including 'Amidon Planet', 'Road to Better Teaching', and 'Teaching Math Teaching', where he disseminates research-based practices for mathematics educators. His teaching prepares future mathematics educators while his research continually seeks to transform mathematics education into an act of unconditional support for all learners.
