Dr Joe Stubbersfield is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Winchester. He holds a BSc from the University of Manchester, an MSc from Liverpool, and a joint PhD in Psychology and Anthropology from Durham. His academic journey includes roles at St Andrews, Durham, and Heriot-Watt before joining Winchester in 2021. He leads modules on Psychology Placement, Volunteering for Psychology, and Myth Busting, while supervising undergraduate projects in social psychology.
Research focuses on cognitive biases in misinformation, conspiracy theories, and urban legends, using frameworks from evolutionary psychology and cultural evolution. He leads the Social and Organisational Psychology Research Group and contributes to the Healthy Lives Research Group. As editor of the Cultural Evolution Collection for Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, he designs online modules on narrative evolution for the Cultural Evolution Society.
His articles analyze content biases in information transmission, including negativity bias in voter fraud conspiracy theories and the role of large language models in replicating human content preferences. His work bridges cognitive science, sociology, and media studies to explain narrative spread dynamics.
