Professor Joe Moshenska is a Professor of English Literature and Tutorial Fellow at University College, Oxford. He previously held roles at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Princeton University. His research focuses on early modern literature and culture, with special attention to intersections with philosophy, theology, science, and anthropology. He is the author of Making Darkness Light: The Lives and Times of John Milton (2021), Iconoclasm as Child’s Play (2019), and Feeling Pleasures: The Sense of Touch in Renaissance England (2014), among others. He has received the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2019).
His current projects include a monograph on Spinoza’s influence on imaginative writers and a collaborative book on anthropology and early modern studies. He leads initiatives such as the 'Creating Criticism' project, exploring innovative scholarly writing, and co-edits the Edinburgh Critical Studies in Renaissance Culture series. He is also former President of the International Spenser Society and has organized numerous conferences and reading groups.
