Namratha Rao is a Lecturer in Early Modern Literature at the University of York's Department of English and Related Literature. She holds a PhD from the University of Oxford (2019) and previously taught at Hertford College, Oxford. Her research bridges early modern literature (16th–17th centuries) with intellectual history, focusing on poetry's intersection with metaphysics, materialism, and embodiment theories. Her monograph-in-progress, Poetics of the Material: Spenser and Milton, re-examines allegory and literary imitation in early modern poetry.
Research interests include Spenserian studies, metaphysical poetry, and the history of science. She co-edited Spenser Studies (2023) and holds editorial roles at The Spenser Review. Awards include a Leverhulme Fellowship and Mellon Fellowship. At York, she teaches modules on early modern literature, medical humanities, and poetics.
She leads the MA in Renaissance Literature and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, such as a British Academy-funded study of metaphysics/materialism in early modern texts. Rao is a member of York's Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies and serves on the International Spenser Society's executive committee.
