Dr. Joe Butchers serves as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), School of Engineering, specializing in renewable energy systems with emphasis on locally manufacturable hydropower solutions. His research bridges advanced design methodologies with practical implementation in Global South contexts, particularly Nepal.
His research expertise spans:
- Hydropower turbine design for local manufacturing
- Additive manufacturing applications in renewable energy
- Open-source hardware development frameworks
- Sustainability analysis of decentralized energy systems
- Computer-aided design optimization for appropriate technology
Dr. Butchers received the Vice-Chancellor's Early Career Researcher Award (2024) for his 'Printing power' project investigating hydro-turbine production via additive manufacturing. This two-year initiative (2024-2026) leverages UWE's CFPR facilities to develop turbine manufacturing workflows for rural electrification.
His collaborative network includes:
- People Energy and Environment Development Association (Nepal)
- Nepal Yantra Shala Energy manufacturing company
- Hydro Empowerment Network (global open-source platform)
- Kathmandu University Turbine Testing Lab
His practical impact is demonstrated through the installation of a 30kW Turgo turbine in Nepal's Taplejung district, developed through industry-academic collaboration and shared globally as open-source hardware.
