Research Interests
Dr Joy specialises in the archaeology of north-western Europe during the first millennium BC, focusing on art and technology in the Iron Age. He applies material culture theory and object biography approaches to Celtic art, hoarding practices and feasting equipment, and has pioneered new ways of analysing torcs, cauldrons and mirrors. An additional strand of research addresses the ethics of displaying human remains in museums, using case-studies such as Lindow Man.
Recent Publications & Projects
Across more than a decade of outputs, his work reveals a consistent emphasis on technological analysis (metallurgy, manufacture, scientific examination) combined with interpretive frameworks drawn from art theory and museum studies. Major collaborative studies include the ten-year reassessment of the Snettisham hoards and the investigation of the Chiseldon cauldrons, both projects integrating cutting-edge scientific analysis with nuanced cultural interpretation.
