Dr. Jodie Fisher serves as the IODP Science Office Scientific Communications, Applications and EDI Manager at the University of Plymouth's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. She is an active educator teaching Ocean Science, Environmental Science, and Geography courses while conducting marine geoscience research.
Her educational background includes a PhD awarded in 2006 for research on foraminiferal and stable isotope investigations of the Cenomanian-Turonian extinction event.
Dr. Fisher's research integrates micropalaeontology and geochemistry to investigate palaeoclimates, tephrochronology, and volcanic impacts on ocean biota. She pioneers studies on blue carbon in seagrass ecosystems and microplastic pollution biomonitoring, addressing critical global environmental challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
Her publication portfolio reveals consistent focus on benthic foraminifera responses to volcanic disturbances and innovative environmental monitoring techniques, demonstrating methodological versatility across marine geology, palaeontology, and pollution science.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Award for Excellence in a Curry Fund sponsored project (2024)
- VCs Award EDI (2023)
- RH Worth Award (2018)
Dr. Fisher has supervised multiple MSc and MGeol students and currently mentors PhD candidate Jessica Cramp on seagrass ecosystem services valuation. As co-founder of the award-winning Girls into Geoscience initiative and former ESTA President (2020-2023), she drives transformative educational outreach and diversity in Earth Sciences.
Leading the IODP Science Office, she enables international collaboration on subseafloor research while designing public engagement projects like the Royal William Yard Geotrail, bridging academic research with community science communication.
