Dr Jodi Burkett is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Area Studies, Sociology, History, Politics, and Literature within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the impact of post-imperial Britain on national identity, student activism, and histories of race and anti-racism. She joined the University of Portsmouth in 2010 and has taught at institutions in the UK and Canada.
Dr Burkett teaches modules such as 'Societies, Nations and Empires, c.1750-2000' and 'Empire and its Afterlives in Britain, Europe and Africa,' which examine decolonization, empire, and their legacies. Her research outputs include studies on decolonizing curricula, student movements, and transnational solidarity. She has authored books like Constructing post-imperial Britain (2013) and co-edited Students in Twentieth-Century Britain and Ireland (2017).
Her work spans articles on topics like the National Union of Students' campaigns, racial dynamics on campuses, and the historical intersections of education and imperialism. Dr Burkett supervises PhD and MRes students and is part of research groups such as the Centre for European and International Studies Research and the History Research Group.
