Jochen Mayer

Jochen Mayer is a Professor in the Department of Sports Science at the Pedagogical University of Schwäbisch Gmünd. He has previously held academic positions at the University of Göttingen, University of Tübingen, University of Bielefeld, and the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

• Current Research Focus: Elite sports health management, biographical methods in health research, risk sociology in sports organizations, and digital health interventions.
• Key Projects: PRIO Study (individualized athlete development), Actionbound for Student Health initiative, and FideliS Study on pain medication use in elite handball.

His recent publications analyze athlete decision-making under health risks, presenteeism culture in sports, and physical literacy trajectories. He employs interdisciplinary and multimethod approaches, particularly in health sociology and sports management contexts.

Leadership Roles: Speaker of the Sports Sociology Section at the German Sport University Association (dvs) and coordinator of BA/MA programs in Sports Science at the University of Tübingen.
