Jochen Eberhard Gebauer is a Professor at the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. His office hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 to 18:00 by phone. He leads the Copenhagen Personality and Social Psychology (CoPSY) research group and maintains an active research profile in social and personality psychology.
Gebauer's research examines two primary domains:
- Self-enhancement phenomena and cultural humility norms (e.g., Denmark's Law of Jante), exploring how individuals maintain positive self-views despite contradictory evidence
- The fundamental dimensions of agency (social status) and communion (benevolence) in human psychology, investigating why these constructs are universally central to social cognition
His recent publications (2015-2022) demonstrate consistent focus on self-enhancement mechanisms, cultural/religious influences on psychology, and personality assessment. Research methodologies frequently employ large-scale cross-cultural comparisons, multi-country replications, and innovative examinations of person-culture interactions. Thematic analysis reveals strong emphasis on narcissism subtypes, religiosity's psychological functions, and cultural moderators of personality outcomes.
Gebauer has secured major research funding including:
- ERC Consolidator Grant: 'Why are the Big Two of Agency and Communion so Fundamental to Human Psychology?'
- DFG-funded Heisenberg-Professorship for Cross-Cultural Social and Personality Psychology
- DFG-funded Emmy-Noether Research Group 'Self & Society'
He leads the Copenhagen Personality and Social Psychology (CoPSY) research group, facilitating collaborative work on self-concept, social perception, and cultural influences. His research involves extensive international collaborations across Europe and North America.
