Jochen Brandt is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at Queen Mary University of London's Department of Chemistry within the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences. His research focuses on the mechanisms of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS), exploring its applications in energy, computing, and biophysics. He holds a BSc and MSc from Freie Universität Berlin, a PhD from the University of Cambridge (supervised by Prof. Matthew Gaunt), and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard University (Prof. Tobias Ritter) and Imperial College London (Prof. Matthew Fuchter).
Research Interests: Chirality and spin interactions, helicenes, spintronics, organic semiconductors, optoelectronic materials, and molecular design for technological applications. His work bridges chemistry, physics, and engineering to address fundamental questions in CISS mechanisms.
Grants & Awards: Royal Society University Research Fellowship (2020–2026). Recent grants include £134,895 for URF Enhanced Research Expenses (2023–2026) and £468,299 for his URF including expenses (2022–2026).
Labs & Teams: Leads the Brandt Group at Queen Mary, investigating CISS mechanisms through experimental and theoretical approaches. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across chemistry, physics, and materials science.
