Jocelyn Bélanger is an Associate Teaching Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, affiliated with the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds additional academic appointments at New York University Abu Dhabi and Université du Québec à Montréal. His research focuses on violent extremism, radicalization, environmental sustainability, and motivated reasoning. Bélanger earned his PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and authored the book The Three Pillars of Radicalization: Needs, Narratives, and Network.
Education highlights include a PhD (2013) and MSc (2011) from the University of Maryland, and a BSc (2007) from Université du Québec à Montréal. His work has been supported by over $7 million in grants from agencies like the European Research Council, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Key research contributions include the 3N model of radicalization (Needs, Narratives, Networks), development of deradicalization programs, and studies on climate change interventions. He directs the CMUQ Violent Extremism and Environmental Sustainability Lab. Notable awards include the APA Dissertation Award, APS Rising-Star designation, and Montreal's first deradicalization center appointment (2015).
Bélanger has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 12 books/chapters, and led 22 grants. His research engages global challenges like terrorism prevention and environmental policy. He frequently advises governments and international organizations on countering violent extremism and behavioral science applications.
