Job van Exel is a Full Professor of Health Economics at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM), Erasmus University Rotterdam. He currently serves as Director of Research and Vice Dean of ESHPM since 2024, and previously served as Head of the Department of Health Economics (2018–2024). He also held a professorship in Economics & Values at Erasmus School of Economics (2016–2021). His academic work is deeply rooted in health economics, with a strong methodological focus on economic evaluation, discrete choice experiments, Q-methodology, and well-being measurement.
His research interests span a broad range of topics including quality of life, public preferences in health policy, informal caregiving, healthcare disinvestment, and health workforce reconfiguration. He has made significant contributions to understanding the economic and social impacts of diseases such as dementia and multiple sclerosis, and has led studies on skin cancer prevention, women and child health in Latin America, and end-of-life care preferences.
The trends in his recent publications indicate a consistent focus on patient and public preferences using advanced behavioral and econometric methods. His work integrates real-world evidence, systematic reviews, and qualitative insights to inform health policy and economic evaluation. A recurring theme is the valuation of health states and well-being, particularly among older adults and vulnerable populations.
Notable scientific contributions include the development and application of the WOOP (Well-being of Older People) measure, exploration of TTO (Time Trade-Off) valuation biases, and analysis of healthcare disinvestment processes. His work aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to good health and well-being.
He has supervised 18 students and is actively involved in research leadership and academic mentorship. He has contributed to numerous datasets and collaborative research projects across Europe. Although no specific awards or grants are listed in the provided text, his extensive publication record and leadership roles suggest significant recognition in the field.
He is affiliated with key research teams and networks in health economics and policy, particularly within ESHPM and in collaboration with international institutions. His current role as Vice Dean and Director of Research underscores his influence in shaping the research agenda at one of Europe’s leading health policy schools.
