Prof. Dr. Joaquin Jimenez Martinez is a Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, ETH Zurich. He leads the Subsurface Environmental Processes Group (SEP Group) and has been a member of the World Food System Center since 2021.

His research focuses on quantifying the relationship between physical heterogeneity in subsurface environments (porous and fractured media), flow field heterogeneity, and effective transport behavior such as solute dispersion, mixing, and (bio-)chemical reactions. This work spans micro- to field-scale experiments combined with numerical and theoretical modeling.
- Applications include climate change impacts on groundwater, site remediation, nuclear waste storage, geothermal energy, CO2 sequestration, hydrocarbon recovery, and hydraulic fracturing.
