Prof. João Alves is a Professor of Stellar Astrophysics at the University of Vienna and corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters and former Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. His research focuses on star and planet formation mechanisms, interstellar medium dynamics, and galactic structure analysis using advanced observational techniques.
Education: BSc in Physics at Universidade de Lisboa, PhD at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Professional milestones include ESO fellowship (Munich), Directorship of Calar Alto Observatory (Spain), and leadership roles in international astronomy councils.
Research interests center on mapping galactic structures like the Radcliffe Wave, analyzing Gaia satellite data, and exploring the 3D motion of interstellar clouds. His ERC-funded project investigates how gas clouds evolve into stellar nurseries. Active in public outreach through The Star Formation Newsletter and collaborations with the European Extremely Large Telescope initiative.
- Key Awards: Radcliffe Fellowship (2018–2019), ERC Advanced Grant (2022)
- Leadership: Austrian Academy of Sciences Commission Chair, ESO Council Member
- Teaching: Courses on star formation, interstellar medium, and scientific communication
Current projects include constructing a 3,000-light-year galactic neighborhood map combining space and ground-based data to trace gas dynamics and star formation processes.
