Joanne Stryker

Joanne Stryker is Associate Professor and Dean of the College of Experimental and Foundation Studies at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has taught at RISD since 1978, beginning as a part-time instructor and transitioning to a full-time adjunct faculty role before assuming her administrative position in 1996.

Her research focuses on the intersection of human perception and artifact interpretation through paintings that deconstruct three-dimensional forms like sculpture, pottery, and friezes into timeless, context-free still lifes. Her work interrogates the hermeneutic relationship between artistic modes, emphasizing the cyclical generative energy of cross-temporal artistic dialogue.
