Dr. Joanne Stewart is the Elmer E. Hartgerink Professor of Chemistry at Hope College, where she has been a faculty member since 1988. She is a national leader in inorganic chemistry education, community-building, and science pedagogy.
- Education: Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry (UC Berkeley, 1988), B.A. in Chemistry (Kalamazoo College, 1982).
Her research focuses on teaching and learning in inorganic chemistry, including professional development for faculty, student conceptual understanding, and affective factors like motivation. She leads the IONiC community, which enhances chemistry education through collaborative curriculum design, and has mentored over 70 undergraduate researchers.
Recent publications highlight her work on molecular orbital representation in inorganic courses, student motivation analysis, and the development of VIPEr/IONiC resources. These span interdisciplinary pedagogy, bioinorganic structural studies, and active learning strategies.
