Chan School of Medicine. Her academic work spans mental health services research with a particular focus on parents with mental illness and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Dr. Nicholson received her AB in Human Growth & Analysis from Syracuse University, followed by an MS and PhD in Human Development & Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University. Her research trajectory has consistently addressed the intersection of mental health, parenting, and disability across more than two decades of scholarly work.
Her research interests center on family-focused mental health practices, particularly the ParentingWell Practice Approach which adapts evidence-based interventions for parents with mental illness in adult mental health settings. She also investigates health disparities among parents with disabilities, peer support models, and health policy related to intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her work often employs community-engaged research methods and focuses on translating research into practice.
Analysis of her recent publications (2022-2025) reveals a growing emphasis on community-led health policy for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, digital health equity, and innovative approaches to engage marginalized populations in research. Her work increasingly incorporates lived experience perspectives and focuses on systemic changes rather than individual interventions.
Dr. Nicholson's collaborative research spans multiple institutions and involves diverse stakeholders including people with lived experience, clinicians, policymakers, and researchers across various disciplines. Her work appears in high-impact journals across psychiatry, public health, and disability studies.
She has been instrumental in developing frameworks for family-focused practice with parents experiencing mental illness, particularly through the ParentingWell initiative. Her research on the WorkingWell mobile application demonstrates her interest in technology-assisted interventions for individuals with serious mental illness. Current work focuses on advancing health policy through community-led agendas, particularly for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
