Associate Professor Joanne Macdonald is an academic leader in molecular engineering and diagnostics at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Queensland, Australia. She holds roles as Deputy Director of the Centre for Bioinnovation and Science Discipline Lead in the School of Science, Technology and Engineering. Her research focuses on applying molecular engineering principles to create innovative diagnostic tools for human and animal diseases, particularly targeting mosquito-borne pathogens like dengue, malaria, and Ebola virus.
Dr. Macdonald pioneered a DNA-based computer capable of interactive tic-tac-toe gameplay and developed self-powered biosensors that display text without electricity. Her work emphasizes translating research into practical solutions, such as the Food and Agribusiness/Turbine facility in Caloundra and anti-cocaine enzyme therapies. She earned bachelor's and doctoral degrees in Queensland, Australia, and has received recognition including the DMTC Project Leadership Award (2023) and a high commendation at the Land Forces Innovation Awards (2022).
Her research interests span molecular computing, virology, biochemistry, and materials science. Notable projects include developing rapid point-of-care diagnostics for Hendra virus and malaria, using recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) technology. She collaborates with industry partners and organizations like CSIRO to enhance disease surveillance and control in resource-limited settings.
Macdonald’s expertise in synthetic biology and diagnostics has led to over 120 publications. She advocates for open-access research and has contributed to global health initiatives through platforms like Gates Open Research. Her work bridges fundamental science with real-world applications, aiming to reduce disease burdens and foster sustainable communities.
