Dr. Joanne Coster is a Research Fellow at the School of Medicine and Population Health, University of Sheffield, and serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Urgent and Emergency Care Research (CURE). She has been with the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) since 2003, initially joining as a Research Associate in Public Health before transitioning to Health Services Research where she currently holds her position.
Dr. Coster holds a BA (Hons) and MSc. Her academic journey reflects a strong commitment to healthcare research, particularly in emergency and urgent care settings.
Dr. Coster is a mixed-methods researcher whose primary research interests focus on the evaluation of health policies and services, with particular emphasis on quality of care, patient safety, and emergency, urgent, and prehospital care. Her research employs a variety of methodologies including interviews, routine data linkage and analysis, surveys, consensus methods, and systematic reviews. She has made significant contributions to the development of the Structured Judgement Review (SJR) mortality review method, which is widely used across English hospitals and ambulance trusts to review the quality of care of patients who died in the care of the trust.
Dr. Coster's publication record shows consistent focus on emergency care systems, with recent work examining ambulance pre-alert processes, NHS 111 services, and staff retention in the NHS post-COVID. Her research demonstrates strong methodological diversity and practical relevance to healthcare delivery systems.

Dr. Coster has secured research funding from prestigious organizations including the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and Health Education England. Her current projects address critical issues in emergency care delivery, staff retention, and health equity.
As an educator, Dr. Coster has served as Deputy Director of the MClin Res program and has extensive experience supervising MSc dissertation projects. She previously chaired the Society of Social Medicine's Early Career Researchers' sub-committee (2013), demonstrating her commitment to academic leadership and mentorship.
