Professor Joanne Bowen leads the Cancer Treatment Toxicities Group in the School of Biomedicine at the University of Adelaide. Her research focuses on mechanisms and management of cancer therapy toxicities, particularly gastrointestinal adverse effects.
Research priorities:
- Gastrointestinal toxicity mechanisms
- Microbiome-cancer therapy interactions
- Neuroinflammation and cognitive effects
- Therapeutic interventions for side effects
- Personalized supportive care approaches
Current projects include the CANCAN trial investigating medicinal cannabis for chemotherapy side effects, microbiome biomarkers for treatment outcomes, and dietary interventions for chemotherapy-induced bone loss. Her work bridges preclinical models and clinical trials to improve cancer care.
Professor Bowen has received an NHMRC Biomedical Training Fellowship and leads multidisciplinary research collaborations across Australian and international institutions.
