Joanne Barker is a Professor of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University (SFSU), where she has been since 2003. She holds a Ph.D. in History of Consciousness from UC Santa Cruz. Her work critically examines Indigenous sovereignty, gender studies, and anti-colonial frameworks. She serves on the Segorea Te Land Trust Board, a women-led Indigenous land trust in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2022–23, she was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Chicago’s Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity Studies program.
Research Interests: Barker’s scholarship focuses on Indigenous sovereignty, colonialism, and feminist critiques of state power. She theorizes concepts like 'Indigenous feminisms,' 'territorial dispossession,' and 'state discourses of terror.' Her book *Red Scare: The State's Indigenous Terrorist* (2021) won the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association’s Best Subsequent Book Prize.
Publications: Over 20 books and articles, including edited volumes like *Sovereignty Matters* (2005) and *Critically Sovereign* (2017). Recent work addresses intersections of care, catastrophe, and settler colonialism in *Catastrophe, Care, and All That Remains* (2021).
Awards: NAISA Book Prize (2021), multiple fellowships, and contributions to Indigenous-led movements.
