Joanna Lin Want is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Writing and Rhetoric department at the University of Notre Dame. Her work focuses on the relational dynamics of teaching and learning, particularly for military students (veterans and active-duty personnel) in college composition courses. She earned a B.A. in English from Indiana University, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in English and Education from the University of Michigan.
Her research emphasizes how military students' insights can reshape writing pedagogy, with a focus on rhetorical genre studies, veteran experiences, and educational hospitality. She has presented widely on topics like military-civilian divides in education, inclusive course design, and leveraging veteran perspectives to enhance classroom practices.
