Joanna Jackson, Ph.D., MSN, RN, is an Assistant Professor of Healthcare Management in the College of Business and Technology at Winthrop University. She holds a Ph.D. in Health Policy & Management from Indiana University’s Fairbanks School of Public Health, an MS in Nursing (Administration) from Xavier University, and a Registered Nursing degree from Midway College. Her expertise spans behavioral health services, substance use treatment, public health law, and the academic health science workforce. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a Registered Nurse in opioid treatment programs and inpatient psychiatry for 10 years.
Her research focuses on state-level regulations affecting healthcare delivery, particularly opioid treatment programs, and the role of telemedicine barriers in healthcare quality. She has received notable awards including the 2020 Wells Fargo Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2021 Springs Industries Research Award. Dr. Jackson teaches courses such as Introduction to Healthcare Management and Healthcare Economics & Finance, emphasizing vulnerable populations and policy implications.
Her interdisciplinary work bridges healthcare administration and public health, with a focus on policy analysis, implementation science, and workforce diversity. Key themes in her publications include regulatory variability in opioid treatment, underrepresented minorities in doctoral programs, and the impact of state policies on healthcare outcomes.
