Joanna Grabski is the Dean of the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) and holds the rank of Foundation Professor at Arizona State University (ASU). She previously served as Director of the School of Art at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (2017–2021) and held leadership roles at Denison University, including chair of art history and director of interdisciplinary initiatives. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Art History and African Studies from Indiana University (2000).
Her research focuses on artists, urban life, and art institutions in Senegal, Congo, and Sri Lanka. Key themes include art and urbanization, art world globalization, public art, and the intersection of creativity and space. She combines ethnographic methods with visual and textual analysis to explore how artists navigate urban environments and global networks.
Grabski’s awards include the Art Journal Award, Millard Meiss Award, and Fulbright-Hays Fellowships. Her book *Art World City* (2017) examines Dakar’s art scene, proposing the concept of 'art world cities,' while her documentary *Market Imaginary* (2013) analyzes Colobane Market’s role in transforming global goods. She has contributed to journals like *African Arts*, *Art Journal*, and *Africa Today*.
Her leadership spans academic administration and interdisciplinary initiatives, including the Grand Challenge Initiative and ASU’s Advanced Leadership Program. She actively engages with international art communities, curating exhibitions and participating in global art biennales.
