Joan Walton

Joan Walton is a Professor in Opera and Musical Theatre at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is also a choreographer and performer for The Academy of Danse Libre, specializing in historical and vintage dance forms integrated with musical theatre and opera.

Education:

• BS in Communications, University of Cincinnati, College of Arts and Sciences
• MA in Dance Education, Stanford University, Graduate School of Education

Research Interests focus on historical dance practices, vintage dance revival, and interdisciplinary applications of dance in opera and musical theatre. Her collaborations emphasize live music integration, educational programming, and performance-based workshops.

Awards:

• SJSU Artistic Excellence Programming Grant (2018)

Collaborations include co-hosting the "Historical Dance at Play" workshop with Catherine Turocy, Dr. Gordon Haramaki, and Jennifer Meller, as well as serving as Assistant Director for Richard Powers in Vintage Dance Weeks. She also engages in summer vocal performance and musical theatre workshops at SFCM.
