Joan McGregor is a Professor at Arizona State University's School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies with additional affiliations as Senior Global Futures Scientist at the Global Futures Scientists and Scholars, Faculty Affiliate at the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict, and member of the Humanities for the Environment Global Network. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Arizona (1985), where her dissertation focused on coercion in contract law.
Her research examines moral and legal philosophy with emphasis on sustainability ethics, food justice, and civic virtues. McGregor's current project 'Reclaiming Moral Capital' investigates how universities cultivate civic and epistemic virtues in pluralistic democracies. She also explores the intersection of bioethics and environmental ethics, particularly regarding sustainable food systems that balance social justice, human health, and planetary wellbeing.
McGregor's publications demonstrate consistent focus on applied ethics across environmental, medical, and social justice domains. Her recent work examines structural injustices in food systems, ethical frameworks for sustainability, and protections for vulnerable research populations. Earlier scholarship established foundations in biomedical ethics, legal philosophy regarding consent, and feminist analyses of power dynamics.
Honors include the 2018-19 Outstanding Public Humanities Scholar award from the Arizona Humanities Council. She has secured significant grant funding including NEH Summer Institutes on sustainability ethics and projects examining food sovereignty, moral capital, and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability sciences.
