Joan Kee is the Judy and Michael Steinhardt Director and Professor of Fine Arts at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. Her research explores how modern and contemporary art challenges frameworks such as global structures, legal systems, and value standards. She is renowned for her work on Korean abstraction, particularly Tansaekhwa, which brought international attention to postwar Korean art.
Her major publications include Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method (2013) and The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art beyond Solidarity (2023).
