Professor Joan Forbes is an Honorary Professor in Education at the Centre for Child Wellbeing and Protection, University of Stirling, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Aberdeen. Her academic career includes roles such as Reader and Senior Lecturer in Education at Aberdeen. She specializes in social theory, policy sociology, and children's services, focusing on interprofessional practice, poverty, gender, and elite schooling.
Her research integrates social theory to address childhood social justice and equality, exploring intersections of children’s services, social capital, and educational policy. Key projects include the Leading Women Study on elite schooling and agency, the Language for All study on SLCN (Speech Language and Communication Needs), and poverty research funded by the Scottish Universities Insight Institute.
Prof. Forbes has held leadership roles, including Director of the Centre for Children’s Services Research and Policy Study, and is a member of the UK ESRC Peer Review College since 2010. She serves on editorial boards for journals like British Educational Research Journal and has authored/co-edited books such as Service Integration in Schools and The Transformation of Children's Services.
