Professor Enwall's scholarly contributions demonstrate deep engagement with the complex relationship between language, ethnicity, and state policy in China. His work examines how minority languages are affected by standardization policies, the development of writing systems for previously unwritten languages, and the sociopolitical implications of language planning. He has particularly focused on the Miao (Hmong) communities in Southwest China, documenting both linguistic features and the social dynamics of language use through extensive fieldwork.
His notable publications include the monograph 'A Myth Become Reality: History and Development of the Miao Written Language' and numerous articles in journals such as International Journal of the Sociology of Language, Orientaliska Studier, and Fokus Kina. His recent work (2020-2023) continues to explore themes of ethnic identity, language policy, and China's transformation from a multiethnic empire to a more homogeneous nation-state.
Enwall has served as an editor for Orientalia Suecana and contributed significantly to Chinese language education in Sweden. His methodological approach combines linguistic analysis with ethnographic fieldwork, drawing on historical documents and personal observations from decades of research across China's ethnic regions.
