Joachim Hansen

Joachim Hansen is an Associate Professor in Engineering Science with a focus on hydraulic engineering or urban water engineering at the University of Luxembourg, Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine, Department of Engineering. His research interests include wastewater treatment, micropollutant removal, water reuse, and sustainable technologies for urban water systems. He leads the Urban Water Management research group and serves as course director for the Bachelor in Civil Engineering program.

His research explores nature-based solutions like constructed wetlands, advanced oxidation processes, and biochar applications for water purification. Recent work focuses on large-scale implementation of hybrid treatment systems, circular economy approaches for resource recovery, and risk assessment frameworks for emerging contaminants.

Publications demonstrate strong emphasis on pilot-scale validation of technologies, life cycle analysis of treatment systems, and interdisciplinary approaches combining engineering with environmental science. Trends include optimization of photo-Fenton processes, granular activated carbon integration, and sustainable greywater management strategies for public infrastructure.

He supervises graduate research and maintains active collaborations across Europe, particularly in the Greater Region (Netherlands, UK, France, Belgium, Germany).
