Joachim Bretzel is an applied conservation ecologist at the Gulbali Research Institute, Charles Sturt University, specializing in freshwater ecosystems and fish conservation. His research focuses on challenges to biodiversity in anthropogenically influenced environments, particularly related to water infrastructure.
His research interests include aquatic conservation, freshwater fishes, water infrastructure (hydropower and irrigation), habitat improvement and connectivity, fish screens, and community ecology. Bretzel's work addresses critical issues like habitat decline, restoration approaches, invasive species management, and protecting aquatic fauna around water diversions.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on fish protection technologies, particularly fish screens at water diversions. His research spans European perch ecology, Murray Cod conservation, and technical evaluations of wedge-wire protection screens, demonstrating expertise in both theoretical ecology and practical engineering solutions for aquatic conservation.
Bretzel maintains active professional memberships including the Australian Society for Fish Biology, American Fisheries Society, German Ichthyological Society, Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations, German Society of Herpetology and Terrarium Science, and German Society of Orthopterology.
His educational background includes a Master of Science in Landscape planning, Ecology and Nature conservation (2017-2019) and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape architecture and planning (2013-2017), both from Technische Universität München.
