Joachim A. Koops is a Professor at Leiden University's Institute of Security and Global Affairs, and serves as Dean of Vesalius College at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). His research focuses on Global Security Governance, European Union foreign and security policy, United Nations peacekeeping, and NATO relations. He has contributed extensively to academic discourse on inter-organisational dynamics in international security, particularly through co-edited volumes and special issues in journals like International Peacekeeping and European Security.
Koops has supervised numerous PhD candidates including Martina Abisso, Gerald Acho, and Clara Cotroneo, among others. His policy-oriented work connects theoretical research with practical applications, emphasizing the changing nature of diplomacy and higher education reform. Notable projects include analysis of the MINUSMA mission in Mali and the Palgrave Handbook of Inter-organizational Relations in World Politics (2016), which he co-edited after a 4.5-year collaborative effort involving 38 scholars from 12 countries.
His academic leadership extends to directing the Global Governance Institute (GGI) and contributing to debates on security policy, crisis management, and academic diplomacy. Though no explicit scientific awards are listed, his influence is evident through high-level policy briefings, media appearances (including post-Brussels attacks interviews), and collaborations with institutions like the University of Warwick and Université Libre de Bruxelles.
