Professor Jo Shien Ng is affiliated with the University of Sheffield as the Professor of Semiconductor Devices and School Director of Research & Innovation in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She earned her BEng (1999) and PhD (2003) in Electronic Engineering from the same university.
- Research Interests: Avalanche photodiodes (APDs), Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs), Infrared Detection, Material Characterization of Novel Avalanche Materials
- Grants: Funded by EPSRC, Innovate UK, STFC, Horizon 2020, and European Space Agency with a total portfolio exceeding £4M
Her work focuses on high-performance photodetectors for mid-infrared and X-ray applications, emphasizing low excess noise, temperature stability, and innovative material design. Key projects include InAs and AlGaAsSb APDs for few-photon detection.
Scientific Awards include her Royal Society Research Fellowship (2006–2016). She has co-authored >100 peer-reviewed journal articles and supervised numerous PhD/MPhil students.
Labs & Collaborations: Leads the Semiconductor Materials and Devices Group and contributed to the Infrared Space Image Sensors project. Professional memberships include IEEE.
