Jo Franklin is an Associate Professor in Theatre Production at the Guildford School of Acting (GSA), University of Surrey. She leads the Technical Theatre Arts programme and serves as Programme Leader for the BA Theatre Production. Franklin has a strong background in professional stage management, having worked with institutions such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and Northern Stage, before transitioning into academia.
Her educational background includes a BA (Hons) in Drama from Aberystwyth University, an Advanced Certificate in Stage Management from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and an MA in Higher Education from the University of Surrey. She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in HE.
Franklin's research focuses on stage management, pedagogy in performing arts, academic identity, and inclusive teaching practices. Her work explores the transition of theatre practitioners into academic roles and the concept of teaching excellence in vocational training environments.
Her recent publications, including articles in Arts and Humanities in Higher Education and Educational Research, examine themes such as pedagogic frailty, autoethnographic reflection, and the challenges faced by practitioner-academics in conservatoire settings.
