Dr Jo Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in the Transport Safety Research Centre at Loughborough University's School of Design and Creative Arts. Her research focuses on health and well-being outcomes post-traumatic injury, bus passenger safety, and mental health support systems. She holds a Master’s in Medical Science from the University of Birmingham and a PhD from Loughborough University, where her doctoral work explored long-term health impacts of road crashes using longitudinal cohort studies.
Her career bridges emergency healthcare experience with academic research, particularly in injury prevention and systemic accident analysis. She is a certified Mental Health First Aider and member of the Loughborough University Women’s Network (MAIA). Key research areas include:
- Psychological impacts of injuries
- Public transport safety for vulnerable populations
- Healthcare system responses to CBRN events
- Socioeconomic factors influencing recovery
Recent work addresses pedestrian distraction effects, bus passenger safety innovations, and heat health protocols. Her studies often combine qualitative patient perspectives with large-scale epidemiological datasets to inform policy interventions.
Notable contributions include developing injury severity classification systems (e.g., ICD-AIS mapping) and evaluating municipal road safety frameworks like Cambridgeshire's traffic management systems. Barnes collaborates internationally through projects like the EU-funded SafetyCube initiative.
