Jiquan Chen is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University. He holds appointments in both the Geography Building and Manly Miles Building in East Lansing, Michigan.
Education:
- Bachelor's in Grassland Ecology from Inner Mongolia University
- MS in Forest Ecology from Chinese Academy of Sciences
- PhD in Ecosystem Analysis from University of Washington
His research focuses on understanding ecosystem processes, particularly interactions between biophysical and human systems. Key areas include global change ecology, carbon/water fluxes, biophysical modeling, and conservation biology. He has pioneered studies on forest fragmentation, edge effects, and riparian zones.
Scientific Recognition:
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2011)
- Fellow of the Ecological Society of America (ESA, 2014)
- Bullard Fellow at Harvard University (1999-2000)
Dr. Chen contributes to academic leadership as Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Processes (Springer Nature) and co-founder of the US-China Carbon Consortium (USCCC). He actively participates in interdisciplinary graduate programs including Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Behavior (EEBB) and Environmental Science & Policy Program (ESPP).
