Dave Bowling is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Utah, where he leads the Bowling Lab (Biogeosciences Group). His research integrates ecology, hydrology, physics, and geochemistry to understand how biophysical factors control Earth's carbon and water cycles, especially in forests, grasslands, and aridlands with seasonal snow cover.
His research interests span ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, and biosphere-atmosphere interactions, with an increasing focus on computational approaches such as statistical learning and modeling of Earth system datasets. He is particularly interested in how environmental change alters land-atmosphere exchanges of energy, water, and carbon dioxide.
His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on seasonal dynamics in forest ecosystems, plant physiological responses to environmental stress, and remote sensing techniques like solar-induced fluorescence to monitor ecosystem productivity. These works contribute to understanding how ecosystems respond to climate variability and extreme events.
