Jiou Wang is the Walder Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Johns Hopkins University. He holds primary appointments in the School of Medicine and secondary affiliations with the Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research focuses on protein and RNA homeostasis in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, and FTD. He investigates mechanisms linking protein misfolding and RNA dysregulation to disease pathology, with a focus on the C9orf72 gene’s role in ALS/FTD. Dr. Wang leads a lab at Johns Hopkins, and postdoctoral positions are available.
Education: MD from Peking University Health Sciences Center (1997), PhD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (2002).
Research Interests: Protein/RNA quality control, repeat expansion diseases, stress granules, and energy metabolism in neurodegeneration.
Key Achievements: Elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in 2020. His lab has uncovered novel pathways in protein and RNA regulation, including C9orf72’s role in mitochondrial function and energy homeostasis.
Students/Advising: Advises current student Zhiyuan (Paul) Huang. Former lab members include researchers contributing to ALS/FTD studies.
Labs/Teams: The Wang Lab focuses on translational research bridging basic mechanisms and therapeutic interventions for neurodegenerative disorders.
