Dr. Jiorgos Kourelis is a Lecturer in Plant Sciences and Food Security at the Department of Life Sciences, Imperial College London (since 2024). He holds a DPhil in Plant Sciences from the University of Oxford (2014–2018) and prior degrees from the University of Amsterdam, including a BSc (2011) and MSc (2013) in Biological Sciences. His research focuses on plant-microbe interactions, particularly immune receptor function, evolution, and synthetic biology applications to engineer disease resistance. He combines bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, and experimental approaches to address challenges in food security.
Key research areas include NLR immune receptor networks, pathogen effector evasion, and bioengineering strategies to enhance plant immunity. His work bridges fundamental science and applied solutions, such as engineering disease-resistant crops. He has held postdoctoral positions at the Sainsbury Laboratory (2019–2024) and the University of Oxford, alongside international collaborations.
Recent publications (2023–2025) highlight advances in NLR protein structural biology, resistosome formation, and genetic engineering of immune systems. His interdisciplinary approach integrates discoveries from microbiology, genetics, and computational biology to tackle global agricultural challenges.
