Jinyu Liu is the Betty Gage Holland Professor of Roman History at Emory University. Previously, she held the rank of Professor of Classical Studies at DePauw University (2018-2023) and served as Department Chair (2013-2016). She has also been a Distinguished Guest Professor at Shanghai Normal University since 2014 and a visiting scholar at institutions including the University of British Columbia and Peking University. Liu earned her Ph.D. in Roman History from Columbia University (2004) after completing degrees at Nanjing University, China.
Her research focuses on Roman social and economic history, Latin epigraphy, and the reception of classical antiquity in China. Notable works include Collegia Centonariorum: The Guilds of Textile Dealers in the Roman West (2009) and co-edited volumes on taxation, Ovidian reception, and classical translation. She leads the Guangqi Classics Lecture series and the National Social Science Fund project on translating Ovid's works into Chinese.
Liu’s awards include the Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellowship and Loeb Classical Library Foundation Fellowship. She has held grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and others. Her teaching spans Latin and Greek language, Roman history, and comparative studies.
