Dr. Jingxu Zhu serves as a Distinguished University Professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University's Faculty of Engineering. He directs the Particle Technology Research Centre and holds Fellowships with the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada, and Chemical Institute of Canada.
His academic foundation includes a B.Eng. from Tsinghua University (China, 1982) and a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia (Canada), following five years of industry experience including roles at Shell.
Research centers on fluid-particle dynamics and powder technology, with key projects in circulating fluidized bed reactors (riser/downer configurations), ultrafine powder handling, (gas-)liquid-solid systems for biochemical processes and wastewater treatment, and biomass gasification/co-firing. This work has generated over 400 publications and multiple patented commercial technologies.
Prestigious recognitions include:
- Syncrude Canada Innovation Award (1999)
- Bantrel Award (2007)
- R.S. Jane Memorial Award (2013)
- Distinguished University Professor (2012)
- Hellmuth Prize for Research Achievement
- Fellowships across four national academies
He has mentored 170 graduate students (64 PhDs) and numerous postdocs, with alumni now at major firms (DuPont, Suncor, General Electric), research institutes (NRC, AECL), and universities worldwide. His Canada Research Chair supports ongoing innovation in particle technology commercialization.
The Particle Technology Research Centre under his leadership drives collaborative R&D in fluidization systems, emphasizing sustainable energy and environmental applications through industry partnerships.
