Jing Wang is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC), with affiliations at the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS). Her research bridges global communication, technology, and culture, focusing on digital media practices, Islamic studies, and feminist knowledge production. She holds a Ph.D. in Socio/Cultural Anthropology from Rice University, alongside degrees from Renmin University of China and Rice University.
Her work examines marginalized communities' media strategies, including Chinese Muslims' use of digital platforms to build Islamic publics. Current projects include a Columbia University Press book manuscript on Islamic media practices and a second book on feminist re-evaluations of media histories. She co-founded TyingKnots, a nonprofit bridging academia and the public through translation and scholarship.
Wang's publications span New Media and Society, Media Theory, and Asian Anthropology. Her projects like the Sinophobia Tracker during the pandemic document racism and xenophobia. She teaches courses on mass communication and media in multicultural contexts.
Her research emphasizes socially disadvantaged voices and media's role in addressing past injustices. She advises students through teaching/research assistantships and dissertation committees, prioritizing in-person mentorship.
