Dr. Jing-Ming (Thomas) Kuo is an Associate Professor in Finance at the Department of Finance, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, UK. He joined the university in July 2016, having previously served as an Associate Professor at Southampton Business School and a Lecturer at Durham University Business School. His academic journey began with a B.B.A. in Statistics, followed by an MSc and PhD in Finance.
His research interests span a broad range of topics in finance, including Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Behavioural Finance, Asset Pricing, Mergers & Acquisitions, Environmental Finance, and Applied Financial Econometrics. He investigates issues such as corporate governance mechanisms, abnormal returns in financial markets, earnings management, and the impact of institutional ownership on firm behavior.
Dr. Kuo's recent publications reflect a strong focus on empirical finance, particularly in emerging markets like China. His work explores themes such as dividend tunneling, board governance in banking, liquidity effects on stock returns, and seasonal market anomalies. His research has been published in top-tier journals including the British Journal of Management, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, and Journal of Banking and Finance.
He has received several external research grants, including projects on irrational M&A decisions, Chinese IPO performance, and corporate governance, with funding from institutions such as the University of Birmingham, Southampton Business School, and Durham University. He has also served as a referee for numerous academic journals, including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, and European Financial Management.
Dr. Kuo has successfully supervised 16 PhD students to completion, many of whom have secured academic positions in UK universities or roles in research and trading institutions. He has also held editorial roles, serving as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Economic Surveys and guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of International Accounting, Audit and Taxation.
He is actively engaged in the academic community, regularly presenting at international conferences such as the Financial Management Association (FMA), European Financial Management Association (EFMA), and British Accounting & Finance Association (BAFA) meetings. He has also contributed to conference organization, serving as a chair, discussant, and seminar organizer.
