Jim Waldo is a Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Computer Science at Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), where he teaches distributed systems and privacy. He serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for SEAS and holds a concurrent appointment as a professor of technology policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. His affiliations include the Belfer Center, Shorenstein Center, and Carr Center within the Kennedy School.
Waldo holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as well as M.A. degrees in linguistics and philosophy from the University of Utah.
His research focuses on distributed systems, privacy, and technology policy. He has contributed to advancements in object-oriented programming, distributed computing, and online gaming infrastructure through projects like Darkstar. His work at Sun Microsystems included pioneering contributions to Jini and CORBA specifications, alongside Java programming environment development.
