Dr Jim Pugh is an Associate Professor and Director of the Institute of Education at Staffordshire University, part of the Health, Education, Policing and Sciences (HEPS) faculty. He leads a team of academics and professional staff, overseeing initiatives like the Staffordshire Centre of Pedagogical Practice and Woodlands Day Nursery and Forest School. His leadership contributed to the Institute’s 15th ranking in the Guardian 2021 subject guide and OFSTED ‘Good’ rating in Initial Teacher Education.
Academically, Pugh holds a PhD, MBA (Education), PG Cert in Research, and a BA (Primary Education). He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) and actively engages in European and British Council research projects. His research focuses on early years education, teacher training, digital strategies for parental engagement, and mindfulness in academia.
Key grants include a £21k Staffordshire County Council study on young learners’ aspirations (2019) and a €39k Erasmus+ project (DIGIt PA) using apps to enhance parental engagement. His publications span pedagogical innovations, early learning goals, and cross-cultural education challenges.
Pugh chairs the National Literacy Trust’s Stoke-on-Trent Senior Steering Group and serves on boards for local and international educational trusts. He has held numerous external examiner roles across UK and Dubai institutions since 2009.
