Jim Morley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at East Carolina University (ECU) and an Assistant Scientist at the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI). His research focuses on fisheries ecology, climate change impacts, and the integration of ecological modeling with field studies. He combines traditional sampling techniques with modern technologies like sonar and acoustic tags to study species distribution, climate-driven changes, and human-induced stressors on marine ecosystems. His work spans local North Carolina ecosystems to the broader North American coast.
Education:
- Ph.D., Zoology, North Carolina State University, 2013
- M.S., Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, North Carolina State University, 2004
- B.S., Biology, SUNY Cortland, 2000
Research Interests: Climate variability's effects on marine species and habitats, ecological modeling, and informing policy through quantified environmental impacts. The Morley Marine Fisheries Ecology Lab employs both fieldwork and computational approaches to address these challenges.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Morley Marine Fisheries Ecology Lab at ECU. Collaborates with multi-institutional partners at CSI, including North Carolina State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and others. Engaged with programs like the North Carolina Renewable Ocean Energy Program (NCROEP).
