معرفی
Professor Jim Lewsey is a distinguished academic serving as Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Glasgow's School of Health and Wellbeing since 2007. His extensive academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions including London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, University of Otago, and University College London. Currently, he also serves as an External Examiner for the MSc Global Health Science and Epidemiology program at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Population Health.
Professor Lewsey's educational foundation includes a BSc (Hons) in Statistics and Operational Research from Coventry University (1990-1993), a PhD in 'Hypothesis Testing in Unbalanced Experimental Designs' from Glasgow Caledonian University (1993-1996), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from the University of Glasgow (2007-2009).
His research portfolio demonstrates exceptional breadth and impact across public health methodology, with particular focus on natural experiments for evaluating population health interventions. Professor Lewsey has made significant contributions to alcohol policy research, notably through comprehensive evaluations of Scotland's minimum unit pricing policy, examining impacts on alcohol sales, hospital admissions, road traffic accidents, and ambulance call-outs. His work extends to multimorbidity research, diabetes policy modeling, cardiovascular disease prevention, and methodological innovations in instrumental variable approaches.
Professor Lewsey's research output reveals consistent thematic focus on methodological rigor in public health evaluation. His recent publications demonstrate sophisticated application of interrupted time series analysis, natural experiment frameworks, and instrumental variable methods to address complex questions in population health. The work spans from clinical applications examining frailty and multimorbidity to population-level policy evaluations with direct implications for public health decision-making.
- Chartered Statistician from Royal Statistical Society (2010)
Professor Lewsey has secured substantial research funding from major organizations including NIHR, Chief Scientist Office, Medical Research Council, and Alcohol Change UK. His current projects include the PHaCT Trial examining homelessness prevention for people leaving prison, the ELEPHANT study evaluating impacts of extended alcohol trading hours, and multiple studies assessing real-world treatment effectiveness in diabetes care. His grant portfolio reflects both methodological innovation and practical relevance to pressing public health challenges.
As a leader in methodological approaches to public health evaluation, Professor Lewsey has significantly advanced the field through his development of frameworks for using natural experiments to evaluate population health interventions. His work bridges statistical methodology with practical public health applications, providing robust evidence to inform policy decisions while maintaining scientific rigor.
