Jim Hendler

James A. Hendler is the Tetherless World Professor of Computer, Web, and Cognitive Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He serves as the Assistant Dean for Information Technology and Web Science, Founding Director of the Institute for Data, AI, and Computing, and Director of the RPI-IBM AI Research Collaboration. His roles include leadership in Web Science, AI ethics, and open data initiatives.

Hendler’s research focuses on AI, machine learning, semantic data integration, and data governance. He pioneered the Semantic Web and contributed to open government data projects like data.gov. He holds fellowships from the AAAI, ACM, and IEEE, among others, and has authored over 450 publications.

His current projects include the Tetherless World Constellation, HEALS (Health Empowerment via Analytics), and the KAIROS program with DARPA. He advises on national data policies and chairs ACM’s Technology Policy Council.
