Professor Jim Groombridge is a Professor of Biodiversity Conservation at the University of Kent and a member of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE). He holds roles as Convenor of the MSc in Conservation Science and the MSc in Conservation and Natural Resource Management pathway. His research focuses on population restoration, conservation genetics, genomics, and disease ecology, particularly in endangered and invasive species. DICE, under his contribution, was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2019.
He supervises a diverse cohort of PhD and MRes students, guiding research on topics ranging from leopard management in Nepal to genomic signatures of extinction risk in birds. His work integrates field monitoring with molecular techniques, emphasizing island species conservation. Key awards include recognition of DICE’s achievements. Groombridge’s lab, the Conservation Genetics Lab, supports his team’s research. He also serves as an external examiner for the University of Oxford’s MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Management.
Publications highlight his contributions to conservation genetics, invasive species management, and endangered species recovery. His research bridges theoretical insights with practical conservation, aiming to enhance biodiversity preservation strategies globally.
